What kind of learner are you?

We did a quick poll in the office and if you’re anything like most of us, you’ll get stuck into using a new gadget and explore it freestyle before turning to the user handbook that’s come with it.

While some might think that’s a bit daft, it can be defended by the fact that most of us learn by doing rather than by reading. We only took the stabilisers off our bikes when we’d practised riding with them. We learned to swim by ... swimming, and we only learn a language by listening to and speaking it. It’s natural, therefore, that we approach all sorts of learning experiences in a practical manner.

Of course we all have different learning styles and theories of how people learn are numerous. One that is often-cited is David Kolb’s learning styles model. Kolb believes that different people naturally prefer a certain single different learning style. From this, Honey and Mumford derived a typology of learners.
